Moodle is a great Learning Management System (LMS) for education or corporate. It’s a super complete application. However, for some people, moodle is too complicated. Many people fail to learn Moodle because they don’t know how to start with it. How can they like Moodle, if they never try it.

Let’s try Moodle out in our local laptop, so we can look and feel it.

First of all, download the latest moodle version at https://download.moodle.org. Moodle is totally free!

There are some options in this page, but we will download the easiest package. Choose Moodle Installer Package for Mac OS X if you are using Mac, or you can choose a package for Windows if you are using a pc.

Choose a package

For this example, we choose the package for Mac. Wait until the download is complete. After that click the downloaded dmg file.

Move the MAMP folder into application folder.

Then click the MAMP app to run the local server.

If you are using OS X Yosemite, the MAMP server will not work. You must do a little trick for this issue. Go to application/MAMP/library. Find envvars file, then rename it. The new name must be _envvars.

Let’s try to run MAMP server again. If MAMP page appears on the browser, we are successfuly running the server.
Click "Start Servers" to start

It’s time to launch Moodle by typing Moodle address in local host, localhost:8888/moodle/ or by simply clicking ‘link-to-moodle.webloc’ file.

You have successfuly created the new moodle instance. Sign in by inputting admin as username, and the password is 12345. Now, you can explore Moodle by your self.

After using moodle, remember to sign out and close the local server.
